Global Warming?

For the past generation, politicians and prominent scientists have been promoting the concept of global warming. The images of calving glaciers, rising tides, arid plains, and cracked desert lands send shudders of fear rippling throughout the globe. As I look out my front door at the Gavilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges, I see not just a dusting of snow, but a layer thick enough for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing.

The weather I have experienced this year, has caused me to reevaluate my winter and spring wardrobe. Generally, long sleeves or a light jacket are all that's needed to stay comfortably warm. Currently, a large coat, scarf, and gloves are more appropriate. While on a visit to the Sierra Nevadas recently, I witnessed enough snowfall to satisfy my winter cravings for the rest of the year.

With this in mind, a few questions for the fear mongers emerge. How long have we been able to track the weather changes accurately and equally? Are the statistics reliable? Do they come from the same locations, with the same instrumentation, at the exact time of year? Have we recorded long enough to know if this is a continuous pattern or cycle? Are all of the numerous variables being taken into consideration? What is the control model? Until these questions are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, I choose to live without fear of the sky falling or catastrophic drought.

Each time I log into my e-mail, news headlines flash across the computer screen. These inaccurate, sensationalist headings still manage to compel me to check out the bizarre or mundane articles that follow. This morning topics included New Jersey's new state motto - "Come See For Yourself". Personally, I have seen for myself and I definitely prefer the scenery here in California. Although several of the other non-selected motto suggestions brought a smile to my face: "You Got a Problem With That?" being my favorite. Yesterday, I spent a few precious moments reflecting on Cyclops or Cy as most of the world with Internet access now calls him in effigy. The ill fated little kitty gained more notoriety is his death, than most of will in our entire lives. Of course, if I had to lose an eye and then die suddenly to become famous, I would prefer to live the rest of my existence in anonymity.

Goals rather than Resolutions

This year rather than making a resolution that won't last past January, I've decided to establish several goals that will improve my quality of life. Firstly, as I recover from artificial disk replacement surgery I am making a concerted effort to imcrease my strength and flexibility. My daily regimine includes stretching, resistance bands, cardio exercise, and core strengthening. My diet is now including more organic products and true whole grains. Hopefully, this will continue to increase during the upcoming year. Next, I desire to return to my love of music and begin playing my piano and performing more frequently. As always, I strive for a deeper faith and sincere relationships with those around me.
